I honestly can't say much about Skyrim itself (haven't played it) but huge open world WRPGs have never appealed to me outside of being something to do when there's nothing else more fun to do...
they always seem to sacrifice plot, characterization and gameplay for "HEY GUYS LOOK AT ALL THE USELESS SHIT YOU CAN DO IN THIS GAME THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!!!"
Of course, I haven't played Skyrim, so my assumptions based on what I have played/seen of the genre could be wildly wrong... but most open-world WRPGs seem to be pretty much the same thing in different visual trappings.
