Though I thought BRRES files only contained models, so I'm not sure how I'd be able to tell if there were any 2D graphics in them or not.

Generally there's a single, flat 3D model (just a plane) that has textures applied to it to make 2D items and such. Look in the "textures" section of the BRRES.
