Texture uses?

I am curious... what are textures used for?

When I take a look at them, they look like disassembled images or colors of a certain object. Is it perhaps for hacking games or something? I'd like anyone to enlighten me... xD

(I searched around the forums and even the site... but I just can't seem to find any answers)

Textures are used with 3d models.

The image on the left is a model that has textures applied.
The picture on the right is the same model, but without the textures.


It's similar to wrapping paper. You start with a plain box or something, and the wrapping paper (textures) goes over the box (model) to give it a different look.
