Donating for f2p games is not a heresy tbh. It's YOUR game, you have the rights to ask money for it after all. Donating is a good way of gathering resources for the players without forcing them to pay it. People can freely play it without spnding a penny on it; yet you can help development by giving some bucks to the programmer. That's completely normal in my point of view.
Also paying him means he'll have more means to program more stuff and add things to the game (programming isn't for free, you know; computers, programs and electric power all has thier costs) and let's face it, it's better for him to use the donations to add stuff to the game than using it to buy a bunch of cheeseburgers and not giving a shit to improving the game (though he also has the right to do so).
