1. I already knew about slowing it down, it's just that the timing for pause needs to be precise. Didn't know about the frame-by-frame though.
2. Regarding the transparent pixels: Kaptain K. Rool is composed of two sets of sprites, himself and the blunderbuss. His sprites have a section cut-out for the blunderbuss (kinda like the grapple poses for Clayfighter) and sometimes the blunderbuss doesn't totally fill out.
