I honestly thought it was a fancy headband! 
I didn't like May either, (And she was apparently an annoyance in the Anime show too.) but at least she had a natural hair color. I didn't think the guy looked that bad, but his white hair and black body suit kinda turned me off. Then came Lucas with his silly looking hat, and I wound up stuck with Dawn so I wouldn't have to walk around with it on. The weird hat thing got reversed in HS/SS, so I was happy to go with the dude in that remake.
Maybe I'm just being a picky turd, who knows? =P
