Yeah, technically nothing avoids you from having a copyrighted character as your ref, but that makes you 'less unique', the exact opposite of a personal character is supposed to do. Not to say it sticks out too much like a sore thumb when placed along with other, original personal characters.
the fact is that since we're a creative community, we get ways around copyrighted characters and the original poster ends up getting a decent personal character. See mighy's case for example. Mighty's ref was originally Mighty Bomberman, but we avoided drawing him because it wasnt creative at all. Then we started characteristics such as mouth, dress etc. to differentiate her more from the base char and make it more interesting.
so I believe John will have a non-bub personal character soon.
