As long as the game is fun, it shouldn't matter in what language or engine it was made, so why the hostility towards Game Maker?
When it comes to commercial publishing, that's a different story. I even met Mark Overmars and he simply rejected both Bouncy Cat and Destroy the Universe for being pixel-art. (What's weird is that while he is Game Maker's creator, he didn't know the difference between pixel-art and raster images in general).
Back on topic. What I'm trying to say is that it could be easily done in Game Maker as long as you do not intent on having it published on a portal or stuff like that.
