I don't get it either.
Sure, GFWL is awful, and i'd rather have a version without it, but what people don't seem to get is that it's the easiest and fastest way to port the game from 360 to PC.
FROM software is a pretty small studio, and I guess even if they wanted to not use GFWL, their resources couldn't support a complete rewrite of the online functionality in such a short time while also adding additional content.
Also, there is, as far as I know, no information on what features it uses, it could simply be for log-in/online play reasons instead of an "always on"-DRM, what most people seem to fear (thats justified, to be fair)
One thing i fear, though, is that this whole fan entitlement results in poor sales and massive piracy, driving FROM into ruin
