Basically, the URL leads to a server who does not reply with an actual file, but instead redirects to a different URL which then leads to a file. Servers can do magical things, yes. It is also possible for a server to dynamically create new images every time, like Sloganizer does, with said images not appearing as real files on their harddrives.
Internet is all about protocols and computers communicating with each other. Imagine you ask someone for a photo of themselves and they give you a photo of their handsome friend instead.
