the thing is, the places and elements are overused. I for one don't really mind, but I can really see people frowning upon the art style found in those Mario games. the bolted panels, the smooth wooden surfaces, plasticky environment, to point a few things.
Those do feel kind of... default, there is no real personality in them, it's as if you were guiding Mario in a bunch of floating toys. A more 'serious' (?) tone would work better: forests with bushes, rocky cliffs, etc etc. (this is coming from a person who didn't play newer games other than NSMB, so I might've probably said bullshit there, but I think that my point can be understood).
