You seriously need to play the second two. TTYD was... dead seriously one the best sequels to a game of all time. It improved upon absolutely everything and has earned itself a spot as one of the best GC games of all time.
Super Paper Mario is amazing as well. It doesn't have the same RPG gameplay (it's 2.5-D styled, I suppose), but it's still very respectable as a sequel and the characters are lovable and you still technically have partners (only they are Pixls, these cute little digital creatures) that you need to use to unlock things and fight and stuff. It's well worth it I say. The main villain is nothing short of awesome as well.
The problem is that so far, no two Paper Mario games have been on the same console, which is a restriction for lots of people. Sure, the Wii can play GC games, but that hardly counts.
Anyway, I'll try and get the chance to play them. Super Mario's non-RPG way of playing isn't really that appealing, but I'm sure it'll still be great. In any case TTYD comes first.
