First I'd like to point out Smash Bros started out as a pinball fighter with no characters in mind.
Smash always tries to be a quality game with or without Nintendo characters. It seems this game is trying to attract players with it's cast without bothering to make it a quality title.
A lot of companies do that these days, hoping the brand will sell the game and not care whether the product is actually good.
