I get sick of hearing about the "Mario vs Sonic" crap, mainly because both as characters and as game franchises they are very different. The only main similarities is the fact that they were both platformers and happened to be company mascots.
What a lot of people really mean (sometimes) is Nintendo vs Sega. Sega lost that, they don't make consoles anymore. (I still love Dreamcast though...)
