In the touhouverse, fights are carried out under a set of rules called the Spell Card rules. It's a way to fight and sort/cause problems without actually killing anyone. It's basically a game. To play it, you need to use spell cards to place you in a trance where you can only use that one spell the card listed. This is the basis of the Windows Touhou shooters. You fight bosses who go through several spell card stages that have a set pattern. When you run out of time or empty their health bar for that spell card, they're broken out of the trance and that spell card is defeated. When all your cards are defeated, you lose. This is carried over somewhat into SWR and IaMP for the story modes, where the bosses use spell cards that you have to beat.
