I believe that what Tonberry meant is that the lightsource is not really defined. even if it was placed in front of your object, the shadows and highlights would not generate "rings" that follow the inner shape of each block in your desing.
lets check the original ship's sprite:
the highlights and shadows were drawn in this way to help the player understand the ship's volume and shape. they do not necesary follow the outline of each part, but rather wich faces/edges would be afected by the lightsource with more intensity(where the ones would are not would cast a shadow). as it is now, there is no reason a highlights should exist on the bottom, darker side of the ship.
the way you shaded your ship makes it look flat, as if it was a beveled image on a surface.
