I can't imagine a game where the touch-screen couldn't be used instead of it and if it couldn't the stupid add-on could just be used. First adopters always get shafted anyway.
When Sony released the PSP-Go (or maybe it was even the 3000) they gave similar reasons for no second tumb-nub. But if the X, O, Triangle and Square button could just be mapped to it in older games (and the stick mapped to said face buttons in later games for people with previous versions of the PSP) it would have made the system infinitely more awesome.
Yes it's unfair and anyone who just brought one would be like "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck" but in the long-term I'd still be for it, even though it'll probably never happen and I can understand (and agree) with Nintendo for never doing.
