I suppose so, but what it does is fits it into a defined square. That is, if it's portrait it makes it wider, if it's landscape it makes it taller.
I don't see why it does this, simply resizing while keeping the same scale would look better, but as I said it's possible that it's just something unavoidable. Which is fine, I'm not really bothered by it, but thought it might be worth mentioning.
