Sure, civilians are entitled to firearms. I don't think they're entitled to five. Two firearms per licensee, only hand guns (defense) and hunting rifles (Uh, duh) need to be available. Anything else is simply to masturbate yourself with an ammunition chain.

Thing is with the weapons Holmes used I'm willing to guarantee he got them through the black market. I don't see how there would be any other way for him to obtain those weapons unless he knew someone in the military and stole the guns.

There's simply no way you can get a Semi-Automatic Assault Rifle like that by normal means, same with the tear gas. The average civilian probably wouldn't think about getting weapons like those unless they were a part of the mafia or a gang.

The police already confirmed that all of his firearms were bought from several gun shops over a period of two months. Including the AR.
