It doesn't exist. It's not a spriting term. Some people think it is, but it is not. Generally, people should not use it.
The 8-bit consoles (third generation etc blabla don't ask me I'm not that old), as in, NES, Sega SG-1000, MegaDrive, Atari 7800 and whatever else is counted towards them have a bunch of differences in graphics capabilities so whoever wants to make "8-bit" sprites should rather check what console / game / whatever he is taking as a reference for "8-bit" styles.
Personally, I do not see the point in making such anyways except for "shading is hard *whinewhine*"
