I enjoy old RPGs because they are pretty much a book and calculator combined. I get to read a story, and to break up the
reading bits, there is the simple pleasure of grinding your characters levels until they are way stronger than the next area
boss. I can agree that RPGs in general are a major time-suck, and most people would rather play a lot of other games in
the time it requires to beat one RPG, but I play them the same way people play a casual puzzle game. I pick it up for a
few minutes, do a little bit in it, and move on to something else.
As for Vagrant Story.. I really didn't care for it myself. The story pacing and dialogue are pretty good, so are the graphics
(for it's time of course), but the gameplay is just wonky. The actual battle system is kind of overly-complicated, so you tend
to get bogged down, and the difficulty curve from fight to fight teeter-totters constantly. It does have an interesting weapons
crafting system though, and like I said the story is pretty good, so I'd still recommended a playthrough, If you can find a cheap
enough copy.
