Are you sure that's not a joke or something?
I mean, I can't read the text but Goemon would definitely pull off that kind of joke. It looked like when Goemon opened that box thing there was some kind of magical spell or something put on Ebisumaru and Goemon's expression clearly shows that that wasn't normal.
edit- I'm pretty sure he's been referred to multiple times in multiple games as a fat man, so
