The thing is
judging a game "by its cover" is what humans do, and you should always be prepared for that.
Your game might even be amazing (for what it is, anyways), but if you advertise yourself as being plain and boring, people will probably believe that and choose to spend their time playing something they KNOW will actually be fun, rather than risk playing something that probably is exactly what you sold it as.
