So far I've only ever read short stories, so that's where I'm getting my opinion of the original Holmes from. If you're talking about the novels I can't give my opinion on that, I've heard that because they're longer they aren't as to the point as the short stories and thus might contain lots of content that's irrelevant to the case. The short stories are pretty much focused on the mystery and Sherlock's methods of solving them, with rarely any sidetracking or unnecessary details.
I do want to read the novels though, if only for the sake of knowing his most significant cases.
