Tom pretty much nailed it. As my two cents regarding his post...
-Mario- Nailed it. Bowser Jr. is the one being shoehorned into everything. If Mario gets another rep, it'll be him. As I said, Paper Mario could be the Toon Link to Link's Mario. The same character, but an alternate version of them.
And I'll put Waluigi in here too. He's not going to make it because Nintendo hates him (), but if he did there would be a lot of finagling to do. You see, the instinct is to list him as a Wario character, but he's never appeared in the Wario games. On the SSBB site, he's given the mushroom symbol. Also, it would be strange to have Waluigi in his plumber's costume and Wario's default his biker uniform. Waluigi will stay an assist at best.
(I could go into costumes here, but I won't. Dry Bowser plz.)
-Zelda- The thing about the SSB rosters is tat they include characters who have stood the test of time and are iconic to their respective franchises. (With the notable exception of Roy.) Ghirahim is neither of those. The main three are in, and that's really the cap. Toon Link is a clever bonus. As for Zelda, Ocarina of Time gets further and further removed from the general consciousness with every SSB or Zelda game. I was shocked that Sheik was adapted for Brawl. In a similar way, Ganondorf will have to be adapted for the next Smash Brothers game. If Sheik makes it this time I'll be truly shocked.
-Yoshi- Fine as-is. We don't need Kamek, we don't need babies. Done.
-Wario- See Mario and Yoshi sections.
-Kirby- The big three are in. Sakurai doesn't like to overstep and put too much of his own work in the games, so, unless we get Spear Waddle Dee, I think we've got this game covered.
-Metroid- It's all about Samus and we've got two versions of her. If Ridley makes it, that'd be nice, but they're going to have to try really hard to make him stand out from Charizard.
-Pokemon- The Mario series getting a new rep also relies on Pokemon because these two have the most characters. There's no way they'd have more Pokemon characters than Mario characters. I'm going to assume Pikachu and Jigglypuff are a lock. I think Zoroark will replace Lucario, and the Trainer will either be updated, removed, or bumped out to keep Lucario. Trainer could just stay the same though, as it's a fun character with a unique mechanic. I do think Ridley's inclusion relies heavily on what is done with Charizard. Call me crazy.
-Star Fox- I'd love to see a staff-wielding Krystal. Outside of that, I hope they're made a bit more different and given different Final Smashes. That's about it. They're a boring group.
-Donkey Kong- The two next most popular characters (Outside of Cranky) are K. Rool and Dixie. I'd be happy with either or both. How likely is it? I'm not sure.
-F-Zero- Option 1) Add Goroh. Option 2) Realize that F-Zero is a third-tier franchise and that Captain Falcon is really the only one who matters from it.
-Mother/Earthbound- I'd love to see Claus/Masked Man. He'd be amazing. Porky would be good, but won't happen. Claus has the biggest chance, but that's not saying much as, like F-Zero, it's a third tier series. We'll be lucky to see much more from them.
-Fire Emblem- Quickly outpacing the above two franchises in notability, games, and fanbase. I won't be surprised to see a new rep added to Marth and Ike. But I don't know enough about the series to make any guesses.
-Kid Icarus- Said my piece before, but Sakurai's modesty regarding Kirby may factor in here too.
