So let's talk about the sel-out first, then. The shaded part's outline is really dark, while the brighter one is barely visible.
The shape could be rounder, right now you've got some bumps in the top-left and bottom-right. The close arm looks really weird, because the body part below it looks like it is part of the arm. Your arms should be more like they are in the scribble on the left, too: not as blob-like, but melting into the body (to have the "poking through cloth" effect). The eyes should be centered above the mouth (or the mouth below the eyes), the mid-line on the tongue is too strong (try to make it less dark and thick). Then we've got the shading. Compare the shading left and right of the mouth, it does not match up. You've merely made one half of the circle dark instead of conveying its volume. I think you shaded it way too much anyways.
