I also noticed that you made the backgrounds on your sheets transparent. I'm a bit of a newbie to all this -- is this considered a good thing to do, in general?

I'd say it isn't. Unless the sprites use alpha transparency (as in, semi-transparent colours between fully opaque and fully transparent), there is no need for sheet transparency. Since it's easier to add transparency than to remove it - several programs have issues with loading and processing transparent files properly - I personally wouldn't recomment doing it.
