Just a quick coverage of a few points I noticed.
He's got no shoulder! Also, the light source doesn't seem consistent - the umbrelly is shaded with light coming from directly above, while Totoro has light coming from the top-right. Besides that, you try to smoothen your shading with a lot of banding - this, however, results in a rather blurry picture. Instead, you should anti-alias with mid-tones only in strategicsal places, not all along the way! Furthermore, the lineart is rather jaggy in several places (with 2-1-2 patterns and the like; here's an example image).
