It would be interesting to know what console and emulator you're talking about. As far as I know, some emulators blend pixels together because the emulated console didn't use square pixels, but wider ones. Thus, you end up with these blurred spots that look like some sort of anti-aliasing.
As in, the actual image would be wider, but is scaled vertically to get the correct spect ratio. This is just a guess, though!
