Your work did pay off its level 100 now, however when a person who trained a level 100 Dragonite wants to battle you'd get destroyed.
It isn't pointless that some pokemon require more exp to train or are harder to find that's what adds to their uniqueness.
If every pokemon were equal at the same level then everyone would just chose the ones that level up the fastest.
In turn based rpgs like pokemon stats mean everything.
