He could try fraps and use the screen capture feature, I recommend he records himself playing.
When the movie is played, he captures what he needs and saves the screenshot in .png format.
Try importing the screens to animation shop 3 or gimp and editing out the palettes in each frame.
It will take a while but thats the best way I see to do it.
