The games are linear, it's just the way it is. People might start freaking out if they found out they have to do a ninth Gym, I dunno.

But, but, but, but, but, but...G/S/C/HG/SS...16 Badges...a whole new region to explore on your own whim! Never-before-seen and never-again-done for some shitty reason.

That was Gen 2 and only Gen 2, sadly. And the way I see it, it's 8+8 badges rather than 16, if that makes any sense. That's the reason why Gen 2 is my favorite, especially if you didn't know about Kanto back then. Almost done? Nope, just halfway. I hope Gen 6 does something similar, but I doubt it.
