So honestly it's much better to try and do unfamilar things than to do the same hting over and over, though, I'm not saying to not fix the things wrong with the pixelart, just that don't limit one self to the same thing over and over.
At this point in time, he's not used to spriting familar things in unfamiliar ways, so give him time.
