Y'know what bothers me? The Smash Ball. That thing is one big flaw.
...Sorry for the wall of text, I just had to vent sooner or later.
I mean, I'm not saying the concept of Final Smashes as a whole is flawed, it's just the way you obtain the ability to perform them. Unlike other games, where you basically earn your "ultimate attack" by performing multiple combos or something, here you basically wait for the Smash Ball to randomly appear and chase it down before someone else does, which interrupts the flow of the battle. And unlike other items, such as the hammer or the Dragoon pieces, which stay in place, the Smash Ball wonders around aimlessly, turning the fight into a chasing game.
And when you get it, it feels more like if you just picked up an overpowered item rather than earning the ability to perform your character's "ultimate attack"... as in, the Final Smash themselves act more as an item than they do as a true attack. As such, whenever I use a Final Smash, it feels like I got lucky enough to get the item first, and don't really feel any true satisfaction in doing so; quite the contrary, it feels like I'm cheating to get a free KO. During 1P mode, the only reason I ever pick up the Smash Ball is because I want to prevent the CPU from using it.
On top of that, because the Smash Ball is an item, most Final Smashes can be dodged easily and/or may or may not KO the opponent, which limits the potential of the "ultimate attack" of each character.
You know what would have been great? A power gauge. Y'know, like in almost every single fighting game ever? By performing comb streaks and or gathering points for doing certain things or something, you fill up the gauge until it, well, becomes full. Upon there, you'll be allowed to perform your Final Smash. That way, it really feels like you earned your Final Smash. I think that's the way they should have picked, honestly.
