Yeah, I'm pretty sure that wasn't even a consideration.
Around the time NSMBW came out, I remember reading an interview with Miyamoto where he claimed that Peach and Wario were not chosen as playable characters because their build was too different from the Mario Bros. and would have an effect on the level design that would have made it less Mario-oriented.
This was back when the homogenization effort took hold, so that makes sense to me. Now it looks like they've realized nobody wants everything to be the same, so they're being more diverse with playstyle again.
