Even though Miyamoto is an excellent game designer, his biggest flaw is overlooking story and character development. All of his games play extremely well, but it takes the rest of his staff to make all of his characters act less like pieces of plywood.
The Mario RPGs (even the "flat" Paper Mario game) are a chief example of how people as equally as talented as Miyamoto take his already existing characters and turn them into fleshed out characters.
