I don't like the music idea because it would get in the way. I imagine that this game would involve transforming yourself a lot and that would pause and resume the music way too much.
What could happen is to make a special accompainment track for Magical Tellis. This way you can mute and unmute it on the go, without getting in the music's way. But this sounds complicated both for a Gameboy game and computer programming. (and I wouldn't like to do that anyways)
(Maybe it would be easier if it were a real Gameboy game because the music is synthetized on the go, and muting/unmuting tracks could be done programatically, where in the computer the songs are saved in .ogg format with no freedom to mute separate tracks on the go)
There should be a warning when your timer is about to run out though (in such case, flashing the timer and a beep notice would suffice). This would work for both timers.
The 5 Minute limit is a placeholder, if it needs to be extended after playtesting, it will.
