To throw in my two cents on the matter, it's hard to make things that look right in limited animation when you apply it to CGI. Unless certain design modifications are made, trying to copy elements from limited animation, such as sideways mouths, doesn't always work.
Take the three Jimmy-Timmy Power Hour specials on Nickelodeon for example. Since Jimmy Neutron was made for a three-dimensional world, not only does he look natural in that environment, but he's also easy to translate into a design that suits Timmy Turner's two-dimetional world of flat character designs and limited animation. As for Timmy himself, when he is placed in Jimmy's world with a design that is faithful to his 2-D self, he just… Turns out creepy.
There's something not right about that permeant grin his face makes when he is a CGI character. He has very distinguishable expressions when he was still 2-D, but while in Jimmy's world, every expression he makes seems to be that same grinning face model of his contorting into various expressions that mostly look unnatural. Let's not forget the fact that how much the grin looks too much like the Joker's smile that makes it look very unsettling when it's not making any expressions at all.
