This is intentional. Images shouldn't stretch the page, they're automatically shrunken down to a width of 700 pixels, so you shouldn't need a scrollbar to see them.
The only case in which they will stretch the page is if they aren't fully loaded; I've noticed that the shrinking only takes effect once they've completed loading. If you have a slow internet connection or there are a lot of images on the page (or both) you'll probably experience the screen stretching, but if you let it finish loading it should shrink.
However, if they don't shrink at all, even once loaded, then it's probably something that needs fixing.
