I'm glad to see you haven't given up on this! The only thing I have to say would be, while your hand-drawn/painted version of the background looks nice, it actually kinda clashes with the sprites since they aren't vectors/drawings. I personally think it'd look better in pixels (even though I know it's more work).
The character sprites look awesome though.
