The "true" way to play MGS, or at least the way that merits the most prestigious awards and titles in the game, involve avoiding being seen at all costs and avoiding any form of killing. MGS2 and onward had stamina meters for bosses too, where you were able to defeat a boss by depleting their stamina through hand to hand combat or tranquilizers rather than brute force, hence you could beat a boss in a non-fatal fashion (though from a cinematic approach that doesn't usually change the outcome of cutscenes). The exception was giant bosses like helicopters, jets, and of course Metal Gear, which involves fighting them off with explosives and rockets.
Most of the fun I had with MGS wasn't with actual firearms most of the time, so I don't PARTICULARLY associate Snake with them.
