Well, I recommend making a game with Game Maker Studio, or Unity if you want more freedom. There's plenty of tutorials for GM in their forums if you're interested.
You've got the right idea with the running animation sprite, I'd suggest changing the head a bit to face directly foward, and leave that head for when he's idle. Great work though! ;D
With the trees, I'd suggest making them fade into the background, I'm not sure what kind of lighting you're going for, but it looks as though you're going for a cloudy day for that screenshot. Here's a good example of a foggy forest in pixel art to get a feel for the colors. some simple paralax, fading from a saturated green to a desaturated blue.
