I decided to finally watch Gurren Lagann instead of starting Mirai Nikki since I've been putting it off for years.
I tried to watch it back in like 2010 or so I think, but I got so bored of it that I couldn't bring myself to care enough to keep watching.
I've been dreading finally watching it ever since but I decided to just force my way through and I immediately remembered why.
Episode 1 was really good and I remember being impressed by it and I don't even remember episode 2 anymore (I restarted watching from episode 3 because I skimmed it and it was the one I remembered watching the most recently) but episodes 3 through 5 are so bad that I just flat out stopped caring and put it off for four years. And when I say bad I mean like approaching the level of Lucky Star episode 1 bad.
Anyway once I tortured myself through those, episodes 6 through 8 were eh and then The Thing happens and then all the stuff after that but before the time skip was unmemorable except the one fight at the end there. Then the timeskip happens and it feels like a completely different show (not in a good way) and is boring and unmemorable until the stuff starts happening at which point the show just gets STUPID.
The further and further it went the more ridiculous and over the top it got and not in a good way. That one scene with Boota was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.
I mean, overall the show wasn't /terrible/ or really even... bad, I guess, uh
but even with turning my brain off and watching it for what it was there were still so many groan-worthy moments of over the top dumb that I got really annoyed.
Way overrated and didn't live up to my expectations, but I guess after years of hearing "best anime ever" not many things can live up to that hype anyway.
In other words, despite its flaws Kill la Kill was a way better Gurren Lagann than Gurren Lagann was but I guess at the time it came out it was something fresh and impressive so the praise it got makes sense.
GL was just /okay/.
Time for Mirai Nikki.
