Ganondorf's first appearance in Smash, that being Melee, was based on his character in OoT, which did not use swords. That is the reason he does not use a sword in Smash Bros. and was given a moveset that emphasizes "power" and "magic" instead.
People are always pushing to give Smash Ganondorf a sword, but I honestly don't see what it would bring to the table. If Ike hadn't been introduced to the franchise then yeah, sure, Ganondorf could be the heavy swordsman character, but with Ike present it doesn't feel like Ganny would be all that unique with a sword in hand. At least being a warlock gives him a lot more potential for uniqueness. I'd be much more in favor of keeping his current theme and just revamping his entire moveset to be less of a copy of Falcon.
