I'd not played through a Pokemon game in the long time prior to these, and I just felt like it was way too easy and straight forward.

You might want to give Pokemon Black/White or Black2/White2 a shot. It's probably the closest thing to the R/B/Y experience in the series - that's the entire premise the producer of the games had in mind "I wanted players old and new to return to their first experience" - X & Y tried to do too many new things all at once (including be easy) and it kinda fell flat on its face.
