Luigi was announced, actually. Hot off the trail of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. The following Direct in October revealed Sonic, and then December's revealed Rosalina.
also here's six characters that probably won't get into Smash Bros (but if they did oh man wouldn't that be cool.)
Dixie: I mean c'mon throw the DK franchise a bone Sakurai. Returns was amazing, Tropical Freeze was amazing. The DK franchise is back and better than ever! Dixie's literally the best character you could include, though I mean I'm cool with K. Rool or Cranky too.
Captain Charlie: Imagine Olimar, only bigger and beefier. I'd imagine Charlie would be able to strike his opponents without Pikmin, but would certainly share the same basic B specials with Olimar. Only, instead of the five pikmin circle that Olimar has, Charlie would have a four Pikmin circle that included the powerful Rock Pikmin.
K. K. Slider: Man this one and Charlie are probably the least likely characters ever, but I think K. K. Slider is the most iconic non-Villager Animal Crossing character. and this franchise just really deserves two reps. I feel like Slider would have a very musical moveset, swinging his guitar around and shooting CDs as projectiles. Maybe even include some DJ equipment as an attack. Not a likely choice at all, but I think him being a character based on Totaka the composer definitely means he deserves to be recognized.
Paper Mario: Yesterday's reveal was just ~perfect~ because I love Paper Mario. Like it's one of my favourite franchises, ever. And he'd work so well as a playable character! Like, not even as a clone of Mario! Paper Mario would use hammer attacks as his Smash Attacks, unlike the original grade plumber, and I could see him transforming into a paper plane and dropping a bomb-omb like in Thousand Year Door. But his final smash is not up for debate, it HAS to be THE GOAT.
Shulk: I've only briefly played Xenoblade, but it's this massive RPG and it's just DSAFSGA -expansive-. Shulk's Monado could lead to him using a lot of cool attacks, and I mean he looks pretty cool for the standard JRPG protagonist. If Gematsu is going to be right about ANYTHING, it should be THIS GUY. (also fuck you Gematsu I had my hopes up about Chrom I mean robin's cool but ffs Lucina??)
and finally, just like every motherfucking person on Smash Boards, Mewtwo. Because he's literally the only character they should've kept and brought back for Brawl. C'mon, he's literally the most iconic legendary, especially for us older Pokemon fans. Just tweek Mewtwo's design a little bit, give him a more powerful moveset, and stick a Mega Stone somewhere on it's body and presto.
