I definitely prefer this kind of alternative special than the ones that have been revealed so far for other characters. This is one thing that really bothers me about custom moves; most of them are unique for this game and not really true to the characters they are given to. If I were in their shoes I would have tried harder to represent actual alternative abilities from the games the characters are from. Some examples off the top of my head:
Samus' Charge Beam to:
Wave Beam (Super Metroid) - Doesn't blast enemies away but will go through them and walls.
Ice Beam (Metroid) - Freezes enemies instead of blasting them away, but required less charge time.
Spazer Beam (Metroid II) - Fires three less powerful lasers at once, but each laser acts as a separate beam and collides with objects individually, increasing odds of hitting multiple targets.
Mario Fireball to:
Ice Ball (NSMBW) - Like the fireball but possibly freezes on contact.
Super Ball (Mario Land) - Bounces high and ricochets off platforms and walls.
I have many more examples but I have to run to work now.
