My god!! It all makes sense now!! Haha, awesome find! You're a genius!
In fact, DK94 uses the same kind of bits-as-instructions type of compression.. No idea why this didn't occur to me earlier.
And to anyone who's been reading the thread; I can't stress enough how much just fucking around with the bytes helps. In the beginning, neither of us had no idea how the compression worked–when I laid the bytes out next to each other, at some point the idea of instruction bytes just hit me. Same with Puggsoy–just wondering if there was an easier method made him look into the bits deeper and BAM there it was.
