I keep seeing comments like this on all the Nintendo-heavy websites...
five out of fourteen (counting each Mii Fighter as a new character)... that's 1/3 of the roster. Really, how many more retro characters do you want? That's not even considering the fact that a great majority of the roster originated in the 80s themselves... Not to mention Villager is almost fifteen years old as a character, Wii Fit Trainer and Rosalina are both seven years old... These characters aren't really that new at all. Greninja, Robin, Lucina, Shulk, those are the 2010 characters. The Miis could easily be put in 2006 when the Wii launched.
Of the four decades that Nintendo's video game enterprises has unfolded (I am aware that their arcade routes reach into the later seventies), the only one which was not "fairly" represented by Sm4sh's newcomers is the 90s. The 2000s have the most newcomers with six, the 1980s in second with five, and the 2010s in last with four, one of which was intended as an alternate costume.
Besides, why are modern characters something not to celebrate?
