No one is forcing you to buy both. One is good for on the go, the other for parties and such. I think they're more than worth their price tags and bought them both, even got one 3DS game for my brother. That's me, that's what I decided to do. I might as well have not if I didn't want to. A friend of mine doesn't have a Wii U, but does have a 3DS and Smash 3DS, so when I visit him, I bring the 3DS version. When I invite my friends over, I fire up the Wii U (when the game is out obviously). Simple.
There are reasons to buy the 3DS version, there are reasons to buy the Wii U version and reasons to buy both. The options are there. It's up to you what to do with them.
I also want to express my delight for Mewtwo's return, even if I was content with a roster without him. I felt bummed out when I found out he didn't make the cut, especially with the demand and attention he got lately. It's still true after all. Final Smash speculation: Mega Mewtwo Y does Psystrike. Also, Custom Standard Special 2 or 3 should be Aura Sphere, because reasons.
